How Benson Archery keeps selling $3,000 bows that are out of stock

About the store

Benson Archery is an archery store in Granville, Sydney, that has served the local archery community for over 50 years. Its customers range from beginners to target shooters, hunters and professionals.

The store sells bows from Mathews, Hoyt, Prime, Bear and Win & Win, plus arrows, broadheads, strings and hunting clothing. Its online catalogue lists more than 3,900 products.

In store, Benson Archery offers bow tuning, custom strings, a buy-back service for used gear and an indoor 20 m range that customers can hire.

The challenge

Flagship compound bows come in many combinations. Each Hoyt Concept XTS model on the Benson Archery site has 26 variants across hand orientation and colour. That is too many versions to keep on the shelf at once.

When a variant sells out, a standard Shopify product page shows a Sold out button and the sale stops there. For a bow priced near AUD 3,000, that is a large order to lose.

Two questions also hold a buyer back from ordering ahead: how long the wait will be, and whether the full price is due today.

Use case 01: A sold-out bow stays available as a back order

Every variant of the Hoyt Concept XTS 37 is out of stock today. In place of a Sold out button, the product page shows a green Back Order Now button.

The same setup covers six flagship bows, including the Hoyt Concept XTS 34, XTS 40 LD and Mathews Arc 34. Across those six models, 147 of 152 variants are out of stock, and each of them can still be ordered.

The button appears only on variants with no stock. When a variant is back on the shelf, the normal Add to cart button returns without any change to the setup.

This is a preorder campaign in TA Preorder & Back In Stock, applied to selected products and shown only when they are out of stock.

Use case 02: A 50% deposit on a high-ticket item

Above the button, the buyer picks one of two options. Full payment charges $2,999.00 now, and Partial payment charges $1,499.50 now with the other $1,499.50 due before dispatch.

A deposit halves the amount a buyer commits on day one for a bow that may take weeks to arrive. The store, in turn, holds a part-paid order before it places the restock with the supplier.

This option comes from the partial payment (deposit) setting in TA Preorder & Back In Stock, set here to 50% of the price.

Use case 03: The lead time is stated before checkout

The note under the button states that pre-orders can take up to 8-12 weeks, depending on specifications. It also repeats that 50% is charged now and the rest before dispatch.

Because the wait is stated on the product page, the buyer accepts it before paying, so fewer “where is my order” emails follow. The note comes from the Button & Message settings in the app, which add a short message under the button.
